FAASafety.gov / WINGS Program Changes Released

The FAASTeam beta test results are in, and I would like to personally thank the more than 700 Advocates who participated in this study.

Bryan Neville, National Outreach Manager for the FAASTeam, has announced that, as of March 12, 2010, you will now see a completely new look when you log into FAASafety.gov. He has also informed me that many of the changes users like you requested, have been incorporated in this upgrade. You are invited to go to the redesigned FAASafety.gov, and look it over.

Additionally, some changes have been made to the WINGS – Pilot Proficiency Program. A Summary of Changes is available by clicking here. I would appreciate your taking the time to let me know how you feel about the new and improved WINGS program, by clicking on the link below, to complete a brief (and anonymous) 6-question survey.

WINGS Pilot Proficiency Program - Beta Test Information

The beta testing of the upgraded WINGS – Pilot Proficiency Program - and the re-designed FAASafety.gov website is in motion! It is my pleasure to report that response to the beta test invitation was overwhelming. Over 1000 aviators are participating, of which 700+ are Advocates for Aviation Safety Foundation (AFASF) representatives.

Many thanks for the outstanding support from our group!

You are now invited to work with the beta releases prepared by Bryan Neville, FAA Safety Team, National Outreach Manager, and to provide feedback as outlined below. This will allow him to gather feedback on the changes, and gives you a preview of the new system. The goal is to complete the beta testing in two to three weeks. Please be aware that there are two mutually exclusive releases and they are not dependent upon each other, so you may participate in the WINGS beta test only, if you wish.

WINGS Pilot Proficiency Program - Summary of Changes

Access to the automated WINGS Program is confusing

 An entirely new intuitive and user-friendly interface has been implemented

The three levels of WINGS are: WINGS Basic Phase, WINGS Advanced Phase, and WINGS Master Phase

 The three levels of WINGS are: WINGS, WINGS Advanced, and Master WINGS

Each Phase can be earned only once every 12 months

 Users can earn multiple Phases in each Level, such as WINGS Phase I, WINGS Phase II, etc.

Individual tasks expire exactly 365 days after the completion date

 Individual tasks expire on the last day of the month, 12 months after the completion date

A Phase of WINGS expires as soon as any task expires

 A Phase of WINGS is valid for 12 months after the completion of that Phase; a Phase of WINGS must be current to be awarded another Phase of WINGS

Aero-News Partners With FAASTeam, Advocates For Aviation Safety Foundation

For nearly 10 years now, Aero-News has offered a free, downloadable ANN "NewsBug" application for all our readers... allowing anyone to receive the most up-to-date aviation news headlines on their Windows-compatible desktop. It's one of ANN's most widely-used resources -- but that doesn't mean it couldn't be made better, and even more informative.

ISP Provider SPAM Issue (ATT/Yahoo, etc.)

An issue related to various ISP providers, (i.e., ATT, Yahoo, etc.), and their handling/management of SPAM was identified recently.  We are pleased to inform that, after last week's server move, we have been able to rectify the issue, and  do not anticipate this to be problem going forward.  In the event that you encounter any further difficulty, please send a message to newsbug@afasf.org, for assistance.

Server Upgrade w/ Hick-ups

Since early last night, we have been working on moving the afasf.org site to its own server, and this morning the move propagated via the Internet. The Newsbug alpha testing has been in progress since the beginning of October, and this morning we encountered issues (i.e, hick-ups), with the application server.  We immediately sought assistance from the hosting company, and determined that we could only solve this issue by reinstalling the Application Server, as well as the connection to the database server. At the same time, we also installed a mail server and statistics server. As a result of our efforts, and the related pains of a server move, we are happy to say that as of 1:30 pm today, all systems are working as desired, and we are now doing some clean up and polishing!
 
We sincerely hope that our little server adventure didn't cause you too much inconvenience.  Rest assured that we are now ready on the server side to not only better support  the Newsbug alpha testing team, but to handle the overall information needs for AFASF.
