WINGS Pilot Proficiency Program - Beta Test Information

The beta testing of the upgraded WINGS – Pilot Proficiency Program - and the re-designed FAASafety.gov website is in motion! It is my pleasure to report that response to the beta test invitation was overwhelming. Over 1000 aviators are participating, of which 700+ are Advocates for Aviation Safety Foundation (AFASF) representatives.

Many thanks for the outstanding support from our group!

Master Instructors LLC endorses FAASTeam AFASF Aero-NewsBug initiative

Master Instructors LLC, the certifying authority for Master Instructors nationwide, have endorsed the FAA FAASTeam initiative using the Advocates for Aviation Safety Foundation (AFASF) Aero-NewsBug to make more pilots aware of quality aviation safety resources available to them for free.

“The free AFASF Aero-NewsBug is a real value, so we’re asking our fellow pilots to forward this notice to all their aviator friends,” said Master Instructors founders Sandy and JoAnn Hill, “so more pilots will see the notices of FAA FAASTeam safety seminars in their area, and realize how much valuable flying safety information that is available to them free.”

Aero-News Partners With FAASTeam, Advocates For Aviation Safety Foundation

For nearly 10 years now, Aero-News has offered a free, downloadable ANN "NewsBug" application for all our readers... allowing anyone to receive the most up-to-date aviation news headlines on their Windows-compatible desktop. It's one of ANN's most widely-used resources -- but that doesn't mean it couldn't be made better, and even more informative.

For the past several months, ANN collaborated with two very knowledgable and influential people in the world of aviation safety: Kevin Clover, National FAA Safety Team Manager, and Paul Berger, Executive Director of the Advocate for Aviation Safety Foundation, who works to promote FAASTeam events and the WINGS Pilot Proficiency Program.

An idea that over started two years ago -- but really kicked into overdrive over a dinner last year at Sebring -- has recently come to fruition. Last week, ANN, FAASTeam and the AASF unveiled the revamped Aero-NewsBug, which marries the latest in aviation headlines with information about important safety programs, and pilot training initiatives.

Aero-NewsBug brings a continuously updated preview of top aviation news from Aero-News, and a listing of FAASTeam safety seminars, to a small window on your desktop. Clicking on any of the items takes you to the full details on the web. You'll have fast direct access to award-winning aviation articles created by the editors of Aero-News, and always be aware of FAASTeam seminars within 100 miles of your zip code.

"The Newsbug will give people more information, and draw them to our website and to our seminars," said Clover.  Click HERE to view Aero-News Network article.

Is Aero-NewsBug Mac-compatible?

The Aero-NewsBug program is currently a Windows application only. The Mac application is a priority item but, due to limited funding, it is probably not going to be released anytime soon.

Please note that Aero-NewsBug is not government funded, but privately financed as a joint venture of The Advocates of Aviation Safety Foundation and Aero-News Network, in support of the FAASTeam.

How do I uninstall AFASF NewsBug? (for Windows XP & Vista)

Instructions for Windows XP Users:

  1. Make sure that you have closed the AFASF Newsbug application with the 'Exit' command.

  2. Click 'Start', located in the lower left corner of your screen.

  3. Select 'Control Panel' -> 'Add Or Remove Programs'.

  4. Select 'AFASF Newsbug' in the list of programs displayed. (The list of programs is in alphabetical order, so 'AFASF NewsBug' should be near the top of the list.)

  5. Click the 'Change/Remove' button.  (Please Note: A window labeled 'Select Uninstall Method' will be displayed. You are offered 3 options: Automatic, Custom, and Repair. 'Automatic' is best, and selects the default options.  Unless you know what you are doing, do not select 'Custom'.  'Repair' is meant to do some repair work to the program if it is not operating properly.  If you are having a problem, contact us first at newsbug@afasf.org before you use this option.)

  6. Select 'Automatic'.

  7. Click 'Next'. The process of uninstalling the program will then commence and a new window will be displayed.

  8. Click 'Finish' to complete the process. A window will be displayed that allows you to view the files as they are removed. If Newsbug was still running when you initiated the uninstall process, the computer will need to be restarted (rebooted), to remove the open files and used settings. To reboot your computer now, click 'OK'. To wait until the next time you use your computer, click 'Cancel'.

How do I prevent newsbug@afasf.org e-mails from being blocked by spam filters (Whitelisting)?

Whitelisting:

A whitelist is a list of e-mail addresses or domain names from which an e-mail blocking program will allow messages to be received. E-mail blocking programs, also called a spam filters, are intended to prevent most unsolicited e-mail messages (spam) from appearing in subscriber inboxes. However, important messages may not be received, as well. The whitelist option is a solution to the latter problem. The list can be gradually compiled over a period of time, and can be edited whenever the user wants.
